Modi was the first Indian
prime minister to travel to Papua New Guinea, where he chaired a summit of the Indo-Pacific Islands Cooperation Forum on Monday attended by the leaders of 1 small island nations. In a special gesture, Modi received his Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape on his arrival on Sunday evening and received a 19-gun salute and a guard of honour.


They discussed issues related to climate action and people-to-people relations, with Modi reiterating India's support for the priorities of the Pacific Island countries. The two leaders launched the Tok Pisin translation of the Tamil classic Thirukkural by Subha Sasindran Sasindran Muthuveli, the governor of West New Britain's Papua New Guinea province.




Modi also held his first bilateral meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Port Moresby and gave an overview of the development partnership between the two countries. They expressed satisfaction with progress in key areas such as health, climate action, renewable energy, agriculture, education and capacity building. They also exchanged views on regional development issues and agreed to deepen cooperation in multilateral forums.


The meeting became significant when, on May 1 Rabuka apologized to Indo-Fijians and others affected by the 1 coup he led. Rabuka, then a lieutenant colonel in the armed forces, overthrew the elected government because it was dominated by Indo-Fijians.
